The absence of Funk's influence is a big reason for the disconnect between old and new Hip Hop.

I got it: hip hop is missing HORNS nowadays.

It's the reason I go back to MJ, James Brown, Curtis, Marvin, Sly, Parliament, Kool & the Gang, Commodores, Earth/Wind/Fire all the fukking time.

As I mature, I realize how fukking profound a well placed horn arrangement is. And I continue to search for music that's as wavy as that. :banderas:

This why you gotta salute old n new in a way because producers had to digg thru the krates taking an old record n looping parts of the song into one beat n adding more to the beat from other records which I appreciate those producers making hits out of some old school shyt. Now producers are more creative now making a hit out of scratch off vibes at the moment but now producers are making beat packages where every beat sounds the same its easier to steal a beat now without even paying the producers I can see why producers n artists get upset when a song or beat was used yrs ago then becomes a hit yrs later by someone else

True story....a lot of the kids sounds sound the same but I think that’s a symptom of every era.....when g funk popped lot a stuff sounded like off brand Dre or dj quick....same when dj premier was on top, a lot of his drum patterns were floating around. There was a certain sound circulating when ruff Ryder’s/murder inc and the roc was on top.......hell back in Motowns reign everything had that sound.......but still I do agree with you the sameness has certainly made the music landscape into a lawless wild Wild West......and the ease of beat making through technology has helped thi too. Before hits had to be made at quad studio, in the dungeon or death row studios.....now nikkas makin beats and samplin on iPads in study hall......shyt crazy.

All facts technology is changing how we live 247 I'm kind of bias being from Chicago I think kanye was the end of sampling notice how the sound started to change around 06-09 we had that snap movement influencing the avg person to make beats n rap around that time the sound was very nursery rhyme type medley it kind of watered down hip hop rap & r&b at the same time its more about 808s instead of the horns pianos n guitar rifts. I think if max b would of stayed out of trouble he could of kept that vibe alive I can see him on sum burno mars type wave but hip hop

Funk was the culmination of all Black American music made up until that point (Gospel, Blues, Jazz, R&B, Soul), and was created by some of the absolute best musicians from those genres that wanted more freedom in their musical expression.

It was the music of the 70's in Black America, and was the main influence on Hip Hop's sound from the late 70s to the early 00s.

The drums that fueled most of the classic hip hop records from that time were lifted mostly from Funk records, the bass lines that drove these records were mostly Funk inspired, and the melodies/rhythms from Funk or Funk inspired records provided an infinite source of samples, ideas, and inspiration.

Artist's born in the 60's/ 70's/early 80's were raised in households and environments were funk music and funk inspired R&B, Soul, and Jazz was THE music of the black community.

We were raised on shyt like this...



















My theory is kids born from the late 90s on, were more influenced by the internet than their families/communities musically, and the music being made today is a reflection of that.

A lot of us older cats were late to the internet movement, and by the time we got our footing, youngins was already on some way other shyt, so the shyt we was talking about was foreign to them.

portishead (triphop is slowed down funk/boombap at it's core) and daftpunk (disco based house music) themselves are based in the same classic funk/soul/disco music.

I remember reading somewhere that Portishead would play the music with live instrumentation but sample it at the same time, to give that effect of being sampled from an old record

The thing is kids under 20 years are at the point where Biggie and Tupac are looked at the Sugar Hill Gang or Kurtis Blow. They are seen as relics. These new kids are essentially 3rd generation copies where there frame of reference is basically mid-late 2000s hip-hop. Like primarily 50, Wayne, TI and Jeezy. These kids mostly didn't have parents like 70s and 80s babies did who passed down their music to the younger generation and gave them a base to build off of. Hell some of the best music out now is reminiscent of 70s and 80s funk.
