This is pretty much the endgame of naked shorting. HF can cash out shorting a stock into the ground which corners a vulnerable business making them unable to use the market to raise money. Another entity can then buy a majority of the shares for cheap and get control of the company. The 2nd entity can then make money dismantling it.

Mitt Romney did this to K.B. Toys.

AMC hasn’t even gone down. It’s consolidating with sideways trading.
