Interesting account.

My ancestors drank palm wine and were happy, productive people. I will carry on drinking alcohol, in moderation.

Of course. The account wasnt trying to imply everyone was a bumbling fool, but you know european accounts on africans are usually written as if Africans arent human thus when africans exhibit human nature europeans always have to do a think piece on it.

Alot of people didnt live super long breh. Modern medicine has extended our life span. Then again who knows how long Africans lived before the Europeans came since I havent seen anything recorded. In the Bible days alot of dudes did live into the thousands though:jbhmm:

I think it depended on stuff like warfare and slavery. You maybe thinking about Africans that were in warfare or who were captured in warfare and sold into slavery to the Whites. Now a lot of Africans didn't live very long on those sugar plantations in the New World or during tribal warfare back in Africa.

On the other hand I have actually read books about plantation life in the USA were the Africans were not being worked to death or dying in tribal warfare; then the Europeans slave owners routinely commented on how long the slaves lived. Most of the African slaves were eating the food that was grown on the plantations, which was similar to what their ancestors ate in Africa

@MansaMusa the articles/studies that you've posted look interesting. Will check them out later.

Do they say anything about what the primary protein source was for West Africans, particularly the Sahelians? Their diet must've been heavily plant based, yet they had a lot of lean muscle mass :dwillhuh:

Grains turn to sugar body. Many tribal africans like the ones shown the pictures dont eat grains. The Dinka people for example lean, tall, good looking and follow a strict "primitive" date. (No grains or sugar) just lots of fatty meats and some veggies.

It makes sense.. may have to research this later on.....

Black folks wasnt catching cancer and crap either. Hell even in the US i remember hearing farrahkhan saying when he was a kid cancer was considered a "white mans" sickness.

This is why many people just say if you can get access to quality meat you are better off being vegiteriant but in America everything is GMO so even that isnt gonna help.

When you look at west african food the meat is always small chunks that probably result in less than 6 oz of meat a day for the avg meal. In the states people literally eating steaks every day and stuff.

West Africans at leaat have a higj carb diet due to their active lives mean while europeans have a low carb high protein diet and black people in America tend to follow similar diets.

In America id say people in new orleans and south carolina probably eat the closest to how their ancestors did.
New Orleans and South Carolina aren't really exceptions like that. Soul food, no matter what part of the south, is traditionally high carb low protein.

The lankiest Africans tend to be those who eat the most meat and drink the most milk. I'm talking about nomadic tribes in East Africa for instance, and some of the coastal communities who consume a lot of seafood. They probably consume more protein than the average West African farmer, yet they are significantly less muscular.

I'm guessing that it's mostly to do with genetics and the nature of their work. Farming involves more heavy work. :jbhmm:

I've never looked into any of this by the way, so I'm also learning here.

Those regions put emphasis on dishes that are stews with rice.

Other regions soul food dishes you can see the African roots and the new world spin sure but many dishes in South carolina and New orleans are damn near the same dishes from africa with a few different ingredients due to what was available.

Gullah/Geechie people eat red rice which is pretty much jollof rice for example.

Would be interesting if a study was done on the health-effects of the Gullah/Geechie lifestyle compared to other AA communities. Are they just as effected by diabetes, high bloodpressure etc?

They still farm, right?
