Let's get this all out on the table....
(And for the record, I started out being a strong Drake hater. Then eventually became a huge fan)
What are we doing? This is hip-hop.
.....Drakes ENTIRE appeal from jump was that he was the alternative rapper. He was the dude who didn't rap about guns/drugs/street life. He was the hopeful young rapper from Canada who had been writing lyrics for years and was rapping to a grass-roots fanbase about his life. Rapping about his quest/struggle to get signed, rapping about his life after he got signed & while he was making his debut album. And every album since then had supposedly been him telling us about HIS story, HIS journey, in HIS words. He was the dude who won over his haters b/c he "wrote" songs that were personal enough in subject matter that even the haters could relate to.
But the main idea all along is that he was telling us HIS story in HIS own words. This is a staple of hip-hop and what makes it different from every other genre.
Moreso than Dr Dre, or Diddy, others who are known to have ghostwriters, Drake was the PERSONAL rapper. We believed everything was 100% him b/c the songs were about his life.
2nd point about him being a really good artist is mute now b/c it's not him writing these songs. He's a decent singer at best, but every legit R&B singer the past 25 years would sing him up under a table. I can accept his voice IF it was him writing the songs b/c they would truly be his words/lyrics, but since it's apparently not, his voice loses credibility; and I'd rather hear the songs being sang by someone who can actually sing.
These diss tracks are falling on deaf ears for me, b/c it could be 2-3 dudes writing them as opposed to Meek Mill doing it alone (as far as we know).
How can you get credit for "winning" a battle against another man when it's likely that someone else doing your fighting? How can fans excuse this?
