Agreed. I rewatched the first one again earlier this year too, and yeah it was terrible.

But from memory I thought the 2nd was the best, but I don't have any interest in ever revisiting the other 2 films. That type of comedy just hasn't aged well:yeshrug:

Comedies that try to make everything funny never age well.
I prefer to just have one guy be funny and the rest of the movie to take it's self relatively seriously

For example Beverly Hills Cop. Its a regular cop movie, everybody is serious except Eddie Murphy is not taking it serious. Makes for a classic comedy.
Ghostbusters did the same thing except with Bill Murray.
Just hire a comedian, let him adlib jokes into an otherwise serious plot and you got a funny movie to me.
You don't need to write jokes for the entire cast, and you definitely don't need to pause the pacing of movie to perform an out of context comedy skit, like the one posted above where they are in group therapy for no reason.:snoop:

The Spy Who Shagged Me still holds up well imo. Fat b*stard, the introduction of Mini Me, and a prime Dr. Evil make that movie a classic

I don't think I've sat through one of those movies to be honest. All I knew is that the white kids at school would quote the shyt out of them. I didn't see anything funny about it since I wasn't up on James Bond like I am now, so I didn't get the spoof aspect.

Please don't say Airplane! and The Naked Gun films are lumped into that category. :to:

Comedies in general don't age well, especially the over-the-top comedies - very much a timestamp on those :yeshrug:

:jbhmm: This really proves how great those Zucker Abrams Zucker movies were.

It's HARD to make a comedy movie that holds up for 40 years and is still actually funny.

A lot of old comedies don't really make me laugh, even if I appreciate their influence. But Airplane! will always have me laughing loud enough to hear next door. And there's such a high volume of jokes there are still some that I probably missed the other times I've seen it.

Haven't watched Naked Gun in a while, but I still quote it all the time. Can't say the same about Austin Powers.

The first one at least is a classic IMO

But the thing about comedies to me is that they don't have a lot of rewatch value unless you're a kid

Yeah. Unless it has a good story and not just a collection of gags. Friday, coming to America, trading Places etc.

It's not always the case, but I find that comedies are more likely to feel "of its time" than dramas
Certain comedies can. Especua

What "classic comedies" do you think don't hold up?

I kind of hate to say it publicly, but Blazing Saddles doesn't make me actually laugh. I appreciate how important and influential it was, and I'm not saying its "bad" or not worth watching, but it just doesn't physically make me laugh. I've rewatched some of it recently and I don't think there's anything in it that makes me actually laugh out loud. When I was a kid I could at least laugh at "Mungo" and the Bugs Bunny references around him, but even nostalgia isn't enough to make me laugh at that anymore.

I remember when Eddie Murphy Raw was out a lot of critics complained that that it was only funny because of the language. I think ironically that's not true about Eddie Murphy but it's MORE true about Blazing Saddles. Eddie Murphy didn't actually use curse words as punch lines so much. In a lot of places, Blazing Saddles expects you to laugh JUST because a character that looks like a 1950's Western stock character curses like someone from a 1970's rated R movie. Since we're used to that now (e.g. Deadwood), its a lot less funny than it would have been back then.

I think its too much of a product of its time, and its time is a little before MY time. Its not that I don't like Mel Brooks, because if I watch clips of "History of the World Part 1" on youtube EVERY SINGLE CLIP will make me laugh even if I'm trying to force myself not to. I mentioned Bugs Bunny. There's something timeless about those, even the Looney Tunes clips released in movie theaters back during the World War II era still make me laugh.
