After all the fukkery that comes his way, the dude abides. The metaphor of the bowling is particularly significant - pins go down and pins go back up, this is a reference to the cyclical nature of life.

The Dude's ambivalence and almost enlightened state is pretty much what the coen brothers are trying to convey.
