First two seasons were great. I have the first season on DVD somewhere. The third season :scust: totally not the vision McGruder had and where I can see the critiques of the show present in this thread.

Overall his comic and show were a net positive IMO. Poignant satire and made you think.

How much weight is he putting on Season 3 and 4?

Season 1 and 2 was classic television.

Season 3 seemed like they were simply cashing in on early success. Creativity went out the window.

Season 4 I don't even recognize since the team was gutted by then.

Was Macgruder even involved with season 4? Also season 3 was the funniest but it was also the season they went after black pop culture the most. I always say season 4 was so bad it made season 3 look back when season 3 still had some heart.

He walked away during season 4 but people have alluded to him being a lot more involved in that season than he was said to be. He probably tried to distance himself when he saw how bad it was.

The quality took a dip when Carl Jones left

i think the critique is ok. boondocks is more negative than other satirical cartoons. if you identify with an archetype on the show, it wont make you feel good the way king of the hill can make a good-natured redneck laugh at himself. the stakes are higher because in many ways, being a black american is a more serious condition.

misusing dr king's image is flagrant. that was a true low-point for the show

i do feel that he missed the fact that huey was the "straight man" when everyone else was being extreme.

i also dont think praising south park and king of the hill at the expense of boondocks was wise - south park has a black child named token. it is terrible in its depictions of black people. and while king of the hill is a more pleasant worldview, it is satirizing something easy, which is white America. doing critique of culture and politics on a black show is inherently much more difficult to do without offending people or engaging in anti-blackness. he should have used black examples to compare boondocks too instead.

the show had a Marxist analysis of systems but it also leaned heavy on McGruder's belief that the self-image of black people was being intentionally mismanaged by the media-arm of those systems. his solution was a certain amount of personal accountability. that probably does make him ironically less leftist than huey would be in real life, and the contradiction is problematic if huey's politics are also meant to be taken seriously. i think the writers were not really totally aligned on their beliefs and ended up creating something that was pulling in a few too many directions.

This is what it all really boils down to. A lot of people would be better off simply admitting that they dont like or understand satire rather than going on these witch hunts.
Most people in our ‘community’, don’t like it when a mirror is held to our face. They’d rather get angry at the person holding the mirror than the reflection they see.

He doesn't know because he's probably the archetype that they are satirizing.

Riley Freeman wouldn't like the boondocks either.
Yeah, plenty of Rileys' love quoting him and take what he says at face value

It was revealed through Sony hacks that McGruder. Was in fact involved in season 4’s creation, but most of what he had planned. And written was handed off to new writers. The real reason McGruder didn't return for season 4 is because of his inability to finish scripts at a speedy pace. Sony demanded McGruder to not be associated with the season at all. Despite him penning at least early drafts of some episodes.

ladjem and McGruders demands, saying, This season was produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined.

• But other emails suggest that might not be the case. Sheraton Kalouria, the chief marketing officer at Sony Pictures Marketing, after being forwarded the message from Aladjem, wrote that it would be untrue to say that McGruder had no involvement in the show, as he was partially involved.

• In response, Zack Van Amburg, the head of U.S. programming and production at Sony, wrote that Aladjem doesnt want our version of the story out there and that theyre wasting everyones time and holding us hostage over Aarons incompetence.

• Steve Mosko, the head of Sony Pictures Television, wrote fukk em. Hes going to tweet shyt anyway. The fight w create good press. Send it all my way. I wish he wrote this fast on show.

Seems like his ideas for S4 was butchered.

Imma listen to this later.

If this is about how Aaron Mcgruder has always disliked Black people, I been saying that since Sohh and mafukkas stayed mad. The series stays shytting on Black people and pointing out how ignorant the culture is. McGruder just like Neely Fuller in that they focus only bashing Black people for being ignorant and barely say anything negative about crackas.

That's why white people LOVE the Boondocks cause the show doesn't say anything negative about crackas and is funny to them to see all the stereotypical nikka tropes.

I also pointed out way back then how Dave Chappell had an issue with Black people and his show was half way c00ning with a lot of his segments esp. Tyrone Biggums as a fukking character.
I didn’t watch the video I peeped that way back then. It’s like they took the most ignorant parts of our culture and highlighted to the world and disguised it as cartoon Aaron is mixed a lot of mixed people struggle internally with themselves they don’t know where they belong. Maybe he was projecting anti blackness through his visuals. The show always seemed disingenuous like Dave Chapelle cartoon. My final assessment year later they took the dirty laundry of our people put it in a cartoon and shared it with the world.
