The cliff notes point to the son being unseasoned about the entertainment industry. Until the ink is dry on the contract nothing is finalized.
Run-tell-that on youtube because of hurt feelings is not it.
If you have a chance, definitely watch the video. The story is a lot shadier than you think, but I have more notes:
-JD is an experienced voice actor and has been doing impressions for years. He's on a few animated shows right now. They sent him the script for the pilot and he recorded audio so he could workshop the voice. They were supposed to respond back with their notes, but they never did. Keep in mind it was their idea to have JD do this.
-When he went to his audition, the casting director asked him if this was his first time speaking into a microphone, even though they should have already had his resume. He didn't get any notes or feedback for his audition, but he admitted that some of his takes were bad and he lost the voice for a couple seconds. In any other audition, the director will point this out and tell the actor to do more takes, but everybody in the room thought his audition was perfect.
-The person they chose is someone JD actually knows. That person was liking JD's Instagram posts that he put up after his father's death. They were videos with John's voice. The person was essentially using those videos for practice for his audition.
-The producers admitted the person they chose had a worse audition than JD. They told JD they would send the audition tapes so he could listen to them and never did. He tried to reach out to them and they kept making excuses as to why they couldn't release the tapes. Then they told him he could come to the studio to hear the tapes, and when it was time for the meeting, they cancelled it and said they were keeping the tapes to themselves.
-They offered him a role as young Granddad, which he thought didn't make sense because he would be able to do that alongside voicing an older Granddad.
JD's known all of these people since he was a kid. I don't think he was even considering taking the role until they contacted him. It would be one thing if he auditioned and they just chose someone else, but they had him go through this whole process, making it seem like the part was his, and didn't want to communicate with him about what they were doing. Especially since this was his father's role, and to this day, he's still grieving.
