Stay downtown..theres a shytload of hotels(holiday inns,marriots,sheraton,intercontinental,soho)..i would say rent a car only if you plan on visiting niagara falls or some sh1t like that,otherwise theres a subway system that covers the city,plus in the summer you could walk around downtown...
My girl knows a discounted hotel site where she got some 4 star sh1t cheap,ill find out what it is and hit you bck...
