From what I’ve gathered a lot of Catalonians can speak catalan and standard spanish but not the other way around.

I'm semi fluent in Spanish and I've been to Barcelona
Catalan is definitely a different language, but written out you can see the similarities to Castellano.
What we know as Spanish is more specifically Castillian/Castellano, because Spain has several languages including Catalan. So the Spanish in Latin America is Castillian, contrary to what many people seem to think.

Also, everyone who speaks Catalan also speake Castellano. I got by perfectly fine in Barcelona speaking to people in Castellano.
