There were plenty of people who knew it was wrong and tried to stop it. There were many people who led slave rebellions and uprisings. There were people who gave slaves shelter and safe passage to the north or Canada. Part of the reason the South even wanted to expand slavery was so they could forcefully recover their "property" from out of state.
