You can't really blame the gov't. It's a tradeoff. They realize they're attaching themselves to the Chinese, but like others have said, at least there is an exchange. Anyone trying to draw comparisons with the other Asian countries is mistaken. Those countries were basically subsidized by the US for decades during the post-war period so they wouldn't align with the Soviets. They had some leverage bc of that.

For those knowledgeable, are they forcing these companies to hire African workers and raising the standard of living for the average African? Infrastructure is nice but a steady wage and rise in quality of life seems more beneficial.

China's model was export and outward looking, they also had reforms dating back many years. It's just that people see the last part of its evolution but the process started with Deng and there have been other Premiers that reformed state enterprises and made changes dating back to the 80s , 90s. The Chinese had Japan investing in infrastructure and some industry and moved to American companies building export oriented business. It will take time for African countries to reach the same stage. They also had decent educational standards, it was one feature of communism that baffled me. In some countries it achieved high literacy rates, good math and science education while in African countries communist ideology wasn't really about the basic tenets of the ideology but a foreign policy plank and allies against colonial Western Europe.
