Cody gets booed everytime he's on camera, The fans throw his weight lifting belt back at him (is he HHH or Hogan?) whenever he throws it into the crowd, he wrestles like a heel, and he trolls the crowd about turning heel.
Tony Khan doesn't need to hold up a sign that says "Cody is evil now, guys". The fans already turned Cody; more importantly, they've turned on Cody. Faces don't get regularly booed. Giving Cody an elaborate heel-turn storyline at this point is beating a horse that died months ago.

The main point of a heel is to draw people into wanting to see him get beat. How does this apply to Cody Rhodes if his next feud is gonna be against an even bigger heel than him (Dan Lambert)?

It's not as simple as "people hate his guts, that's the point!". WWE has gone to shyt because they convinced themselves that making people mad was the way to go. This Cody thing is still salvageable but AEW hasn't done anything yet that would warrant praising or even pointing out they are going in the right direction.

I actually think he's going to drop the belt to Sky in the near future, which is kind of a nightmare scenario to me. I'd much rather just have Cody hold it if I had to pick between him and Sky.

While it's certainly something I really don't want to watch (I don't care how meta your gimmick is or how much you're working the smarks if I don't really want to see you to begin with), Cody could be so much worse than he actually is. At least his ego-stroking bullshyt doesn't reflexively make me want to change the channel like a Scorpio Sky promo does.
