Probably just poor network management. With more bots, more people interesting in looking in on what we as a people are saying, and more interest in seeking how to control the narrative; we end up with a lot of faces and bots viewing this website. Good network management requires constant monitoring and adjustments, something this site is most definitely not receiving.
