I know we have some teachers on here. I remember a poster doing an ask me anything thread.

Let's build. Share our stories, working conditions, strategies, or anything else.

Start with what do you teach, and what city or state.

I'm in my 3rd year in Charlotte, NC. I teach EC in middle school.

Currently looking for another school next year. Had a preliminary phone interview at KIPP today. Their school day is 7:30-4:15 lol. They only pay 5-8% more than the public school system to compensate for those extra 2 hours :scust:

Im thinking about going into teaching.

Got a couple of questions.

:patrice:

Will there be opportunities for a teacher to have an affair with a coworker?

Do i have to pack my own lunch?

How often do you have to lie to your students or their parents?

Does the job require drug tests?

Is showing favoritsm for some students frowned upon? Is manipulating students frowned upon?

What are some of the politics of being a teacher/working in a school?

Of course. Most teachers are female, so if you're a male there are options.

Do i have to pack my own lunch?

That or eat the school lunch. Your school could also let you leave, or may not.

How often do you have to lie to your students or their parents?

Never. No reason to lie about anything.

Does the job require drug tests?

Most likely yes. Just one before you get hired.

Naturally favoritism happens. I wouldn't include it in your grading practices.

The biggest thing for me is state testing. There's so much emphasis on it. They want you to differentiate instruction, but then give everybody a standardized test. Also success shouldn't be measured with testing. Teacher pay and raises are also an issue in some states.

any stories?

Nothing too crazy.

My first year I had a parent tell me somebody was gonna handle me lol. Cause I kicked her daughter out of class. I told her, well you know where my room is.

Last year a teacher got fired cause she ran up on a student and cornered her. She told the student she'll snatch her weave out. They was wheeling her mini fridge out on a dolley like an hour later.

The head of school in my first year got fired in February out the blue.

Once that first year I was at a teacher get together. Pretty much me and head of school who got fired were the last ones standing just drinking brews. He invited me over to meet his family and we drank more brews.

Went over there a few more times just to kick it. They had a fire going on outside and shyt. I had half 24 pack throughout the night. When I left I drove over his cable box outside in the ground. He laughed about it at school. He was cool as hell.

This year our school went on lock down because a road rage incident involving a parent and another driver made its way onto school grounds. They followed a female parent into the school and pulled a strap on her. While we were on lock down like 6 teacher car windows were smashed (including mine) subs and a gps stolen.

I just finished my Bachelor's in Music Education in December and applied for my teaching license last friday. I sub from time to time. I only have experience being a substitute and student teaching. I've seen things though :lupe:

Craziest fight you ever seen?

haven't seen anything "crazy" at the middle school level. But last year in the high school section 2 pregnant girls started fighting and then it turned into a brawl, dudes jumping in, holes in the wall. The sad thing is it led to a severely premature baby for one of the girls, who was only like 15.
