I talked to several people who LOVED the original and when they found out this was gonna be a musical they were like

Stop redoing the old classics. Come up with new classics.

Having a sizeable budget movie requires mainstream audiences to buy tickets, not just black people.


I liked the movie, even saw the play on Broadway some years back, but 90 million to produce and at least another 40 to market....they needed to do at least 250 plus million at theater to recoup there.

But but but the bigger picture, it’s bad for black movies, they’re going to stop funding black movies. So now black people are obligated to support movies they don’t want to see. Out of fear that future black projects will stop being funded lol. Nobody told Oprah to make a 100 million dollar budget. Color Purple remake that’s also a musical in 2023. I’m sure black people are going to support the next Jordan Peele, Ryan Coolger, and black superhero movie.

in this day and age of , it's gonna be even harder for a major motion picture studio to fund black projects with large budgets. They have no problem giving 20 million to shoot a low budget film for us, but you start asking for major bread, you getting the


we ain't white or jewish or alphabet gang, they'll always get their movies funded even if they flop tremendously. But when it's us, it's about asking for a lot to produce a major budget film.

fukkin La La Land was made on a 30 million dollar budget in 2016 (38 million in today's dollars). shyt went on to make 450 million worldwide.

Oprah needing triple that to make the Color Purple Musical Remake was crazy.

The biggest issue is its a musical they are notoriously hard to market. I've gone to musical movies and seen people get up and walk out for refunds as soon as the singing starts. As they had no idea

Hence why if you watch trailers for them they never explicitly say it's a musical. And that's for a reason.

Wonka had the same issue but thankfully had enough of a fan base of the musical that pulled it around
