I think (hope) that with the number of people getting sick each day with this variant. Things will get better eventually.
I personally know of kids, vaccinated and unvaccinated people that got sick this time around. Fortunately none had to be hospitalized and symptoms didn’t last long.

there are a number of factors at play.
vaccine development and it's 90% success rate in clinical trials was based on the alpha variant in summer 2020. we've since seen 4 newer variants that we've known could render it less effective similar to flu vaccines.
vaccination time frame and waning anti-bodies after months of no antigens present will leave people vulnerable to infection. so if folks got vaccinated in january, february and march then 6 months after their 2nd dose, they'd have way less anti-bodies circulating in their body if they didn't get a booster shot.
