And I don't see why we don't do this. When the industry had things on lockdown Hip Hop artists were selling mixtapes and doing shows strictly off the power of mixtapes. Funny thing is even when they tried to trap black artists and capitalize on them, they were able to duck from underneath the trap and make money without their support.

like yeah alright you had this beat, now watch me do it better :jawalrus: and theres almost nothing better in this genre than when a rapper rips a beat better than the original :banderas:
Like Bobby Shmurda did for Hot N*gga :wow:

:mjlol:

All jokes aside, like Lupe did on "Switch", that was so dope

Originally yeah, for sure...but nowadays "mixtapes" are basically albums, and vice-versa. For better and for worse.
Nothing wrong with that. Mixtapes had to evolve BC the record industry has a stranglehold on the music. With they wack ah. Doesn't change the fact that majority of our cultures music derives from the underground and then gets blown up to the masses. Its so anti pop and I love it

I hear you but for me a "mixtape" was stuff I wouldn't hear on an album : a rapper getting on another rapper's instrumental, crazy remixes, new versions of songs, unreleased verses, and so on.

Nowadays there is no difference whatsoever between a "mixtape" and an official album content-wise and format-wise..

I still feel that mixtapes are a lot more unpolished, Future did something special in which he dropped an album based on the previous three mixtapes that was just as street/unpolished. But usually I feel that mixtapes are very unstructured, production cheaper and songs can usually be wilder. But you are right, since good production is cheap nowadays, recording is simpler and cheaper, distribution is free etc there's no reason to not drop a mixtape that is like an album cause they flow through the internet as if they were albums.

It's still an interesting format that strictly exists in hiphop, which is dope.

the dj's are at fault for this

yea we still get the artist mixtapes... but like people said, those are just albums

but getting those 25 cuts... 20 of them exclusives.. a mix of artists.. freestyles and shyt

it put you on to people you never heard of.. made rappers actually have to put out their best work cause you didn't want to come weak on a clue tape... put out hits before they were hits so shyt was organic

it was just a different time then... and now everything is store bought from the buzz to the views to the sales.. and if you ain't buying, we don't hear about you

Dang, y'all can't appreciate. I'm over here talking about the essence and y'all wanna say what yount like. Hip hop wasn't going to stay with break beats so why would mixtapes stay in the same format as well?

You forget not everyone was doing mixtapes where they used someone else's beats. And some of the best acts have been found that way.

Now y'all are mad for getting albums for free. Imma put a few of you on ignore BC you just gather and squawk. You're like crows

In fact perhaps the problem is a lot of you are one dimensional and can only refer to east coast mixtapes

Where in the hell did you see me complaining about free mix tapes breh?

I simply said DJs stopped making them and now artists do mix tapes like albums

We are discussing mix tapes correct? The only mixtapes that are not around anymore are the DJ ones. Why would I come in here to talk about "man I wish we still had artists mixtapes " when we still have them

Calm your ass down

Nobody is NOT appreciating mixtapes. shyt 99% of the time we love them more than the actual albums. I merely spoke on the fact that the DJ ones also said fukk the industry and radio, and allowed artists to shine without store bought buzz and paid downloads
