As we see the Jets hold off 3 teams, but fall into Same Ol' Jets territory for the rest, it looks like Geno Smith is shaping up to be another Cam Newton, but except for the obvious draft pick difference.
Were they both hyped and coveted during their last college seasons? Yes. You shoulda seen the stans on chiefsplanet.com
and
for Geno, waiting for that #2 pick on draft day.
Were they both tasked with breathing new life into franchises? Panthers were 2-14 before Cam, and Geno was neck-n-neck with Sanchez during training camp before the injury sealed the deal.
Are they both capable of good, clutch decisions? Yes. I've seen them both throw some amazing passes, and can be mobile when needed.
So both can be winners who hardly know the meaning of "trap game" and can capitalize on mistakes from the other team.
Despite all this, both struggle for the same reason:
They are both feast or famine.
Cam can either earn his Superman pose, or put up some
performances, which is why he has never made any playoff appearances. Geno, when the game is close enough, actually wakes up, but just has those
moments where he's the head clown in the Jets' circus.
Both also
hard on weak teams, running on all cylinders and showing us their full capabilities, but if the other defense can keep up for both halves, then both Cam and Geno just start wearing down until even fancy scrambling out the pocket goes nowhere. A committed defense with a proper contain game can keep them at bay, forcing them to keep passing, and both have trouble keeping the momentum going when they are called to primarily pass.
I know it's his rookie season, but if he's to succeed in the NFL, he's gonna have to know how to trust his arm more and know his pocket enough to
- avoid sacks
- look at ALL of his options so that he's not getting flustered and throws yet another pick
- Not run around aimlessly, turning 5 yd drops into 15 yd drops.
In short? Geno is Cam 2.0 now, where we love them both to death when they win, and just
at their losses, cuz many are just that bad. But of course, he is capable of developing, and has his whole career ahead of him.
