I think you guys are misunderstanding the sentence. He was given 22.5 years which means he'll have to serve the full term that's not a light sentence but it's not the maximum either however it is the most a former cop has ever been charged for murder.

22 years on a body is light. That's a plea offer status. Most cats down for a body would jump on anything near 20.

This is pretty significant.

When it's a base of 12.5, getting another decade is surprising but nowhere near that 40 year max.

Judge couldn't give him 40 even if he wanted to. Chauvin has no priors and based off Minnesota sentencing guidelines the max he could get is 30.
