I’m nowhere near naive enough to believe this will be the start of a much-needed national reform of policing. Chauvin was so obviously guilty that they had to give him up, and I’m certain his case will be looked at as a single rogue cop and not as evidence that policing as an institution is systematically broken.
But you know what? Right now, I don’t care. For ONCE, justice was done. We get so few of these moments. Enjoy it.
It’s cool that he got convicted on all counts, rightfully so. But now it’s back to regularly scheduled programming.
People celebrate this was a huge win, another black man gets killed in the streets, the other officers go free, nikkas caping and c00ning for the system, and ultimately nothing fundamentally changes.
