The Edge: 1997 ingrained Hollywood racism

You want to see some down home good ol’ Boy racism, check this flick. Just the 1st 30 minutes or so. It’s like the director didn’t have a single person to check him so he went all out.

• They treat the sole black character like a step n fetch it
• A shoeshine joke
• Dismisses himand tells him to go make a spear
• Have him doing the whole bugged eyed “lawdy me!” bit

Reason I bring this up there’s been some threads about that 90s-00s lack of black film. There was some kind of racism resurgence in Hollywood after all the progress made in the 80s. I think black Hollywood is starting to get it back now.

BUT

THERES NO WAY THEY WOULD TREAT A WHITE CHARACTER LIKE THEY DID DUDE.

Having him cut himself accidentally then have him brutally mauled and eaten would never happen to a white character.

It's a very intentional racist set of scenes.

Yea that never sat right with me looking back but a the 90s was like a transitional period when it came to Black characters in film because the pushback from a critical and even academic standpoint was still in its formative years.

My guy from Oz and the Matrix. Movies were shytty to every non white character up until the 00's. Singleton, Lee, Van Pebles, the Hughes, those guys really did wonders for actually creating black narratives.
