Alabama is like a football factory for the NFL now. Saban has a dynasty on his hands and will probably win at least 3 more rings before he retires.

Kevin Steele back at the capstone

Veteran coach Kevin Steele will join Nick Saban's staff at Alabama in an off-the-field capacity.

Steele did not coach in 2012.

He previously served as the defensive coordinator at Clemson under Dabo Swinney from 2009-2011.

Steele served under Nick Saban in 2007 and 2008 at Alabama. His previous coaching experience includes stints at Florida State, Baylor (head coach), Carolina Panthers, Nebraska, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, and New Mexico State.

It is believed that Steele will serve in a player personnel role.

Earlier this off-season, Saban hired former Colorado defensive backs coach Greg Burns to replace Jeremy Pruitt. The Crimson Tide have also lost a number of quality control assistants.

Kevin Garver joined the Arizona Cardinals staff, Russ Callaway joined the Murray State staff, and Kelvin Sigler accepted the defensive backs job at Northern Illinois.

On Monday, Alabama fans learned that Mario Cristobal will be their new offensive line coach. The hire should help the Crimson Tide’s chances with ESPN Watch List wide receiver Jake McCrary (Miami/Coral Reef), who knew Cristobal from his days as head coach at Florida International and more recently from his stint at Miami.

“Coach Cristobal, he’s a great coach,” McCrary said. “He was over at FIU and turned that program around. He was at Miami for a short time. That’s when I really started to know him a little better.

“A better offer came on the table, and he took the best job that was for him, the Alabama job. I’m happy for him, and I think that will help Alabama a lot more because he’s a local guy, and he could get the local kids up there to Alabama.”

The 2014 class has a number of talented recruits from Miami and the surrounding areas.

In addition to McCrary, they include wide receiver Ermon Lane, offensive tackle K.C. McDermott and running back Sony Michel.

For Lane and McCrary, the UA coaches need only mention a fellow wide receiver from the Miami area, Tide freshman Amari Cooper.

“He was a kid, I kind of felt like he was underrated at the beginning,” McCrary said. “I was actually up there when he got the Alabama offer. He balled out at the camp, and Coach [Nick] Saban really liked him. For him to go up to Alabama, start as a freshman and break the records that he did, it was only a plus.”

McCrary, a former Florida State commitment, has Alabama pretty high on his list. But he says Clemson, Florida State and West Virginia are the three schools that are coming after him the hardest.

“Right now, I’m just trying to take my recruitment a little slower because I was once committed and I felt like I committed too early,” he said. “Now I just want take a step back, really get to know the coaches and find out which program is best for me.”

On Monday, McCrary added a new school to the growing list of offers -- Auburn.

“The Auburn offer came from Coach [Dameyune] Craig,” McCrary said. “He actually contacted me on Facebook, asked if I was interested in Auburn, and he told me to give him a call if I was. I gave him a call right away.

“He asked me, ‘Are you ready to play some big-time ball?' He said that the program was going to change. It felt real great because Auburn is an SEC school with great tradition and a great program. It was just amazing to have the offer.”

This weekend, McCrary plans to attend junior day at Florida State. He’s already been to junior days at Clemson and more recently, Miami.

Mack Brown is such a salty little hoe

Mack Brown said:
Alabama is ahead of all of us with the number of personnel they've hired, and that's something that everybody's looking very closely at.I can't blame Alabama for doing what they needed to do to be successful. And the thing you've got to look at if you're looking at college football is, can everybody do that and is that fair. And it's fair for Alabama because they have made it work for them, so I would not be critical of them at all. What I think, the patterns I see in my past in this job, is when there were strength coaches that were doing the same thing and everybody had ten strength coaches and they had everyone for that position. The NCAA realized it, and they cut them to five. I think what we'll see in a year is that the analyst/quality control positions will be cut to a certain number. I think that we will see that the positions that you have across the board will be cut. So you'll have nine assistant coaches and the head coach. Right now, we are restricted to four graduate assistants. There is no restriction on quality control. I think that you'll see a restriction coming. I'm sure that will be by the presidents and the athletic directors. I personally would elect to see the quality control guys be able to coach, because if they are coaches, it's hard to monitor who is and who is not, so let them coach, and I would like to see that. And then I think you'll see that they will have a number of 20 or less that can work with football. In general, I think you'll let them see all those guys recruit, but I don't think that we will have unlimited numbers this time next year.

Junior day at Alabama has become quite the event. This year, the Crimson Tide hosted an array of prospects from all over the country, ranging from juniors in high school to eighth graders.

The lone commitment, in fact, did not come a 2014 prospect. It came from sophomore defensive back Deionte Thompson (Orange, Texas/West Orange).

“The system they run at Alabama is just like what we run at West Orange, and it makes me feel like I’m at home,” Thompson said. “I just decided to take a shot at it. I wanted to commit, get that out of the way, so I could focus on getting a state championship before I leave high school.”

In all, the Alabama staff extended close to 10 scholarship offers during Saturday’s junior day. Although the Tide didn’t add to its 2014 class, the weekend shed some light on UA’s approach to this class.

One of the more surprising offers of the weekend went to ESPN Watch List quarterback Tyler Harris (Blackshear, Ga./Pierce County). It was his first offer, and even he was surprised when he heard the news.

Harris becomes the third 2014 quarterback offered by Alabama, joining David Cornwell (Norman, Okla./Norman North) and Jacob Park (Goose Creek, S.C./Stratford). The three signal-callers are all expected to attend the Tide’s camp in June where they will compete against each other for a spot in this class.

“[Saban] told me he was going to offer, but he wanted me to come back this summer because he said that they would offer three guys, but they’re only going to take one,” Harris said. “So to come back in the summer would be a big thing for me.”

Park, who picked up his offer from Alabama last week, also attended the Tide’s junior day on Saturday. He and his father, Adam Park, were very impressed with the program.

“The facilities, they’re very impressive,” the elder Park said. “When you win three national championships out of four, I guess you can have things like that. Very, very, very big weight room. They just built it two weeks ago.”

It’s unclear whether or not Alabama plans to offer any more quarterbacks before the summer, but others, including Brandon Dawkins (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian), are also expected to come and throw at June’s camp.
