Maybe branded was the wrong word. Identity may be a better term.

He wrote a catchier tune that is more understood by the masses. Wild Boy was a pretty catchy song but a 45 year old white woman wouldn't laugh the same way as hearing about the Thrift Shop. As far as identity we only know them both as some underground rappers who earned their stripes in some city none of us really know or care about.

Macklemore is entering the territory of where he is going to go after that next 'Thrift Shop' and it won't be as catchy or popular. His gimmick card with the gay marriage thing was already played in the last hand.

This song came out 5 years ago and it ran with a similar formula which was a popular song that tons of regular people could rlate to. This was around the last time when 'Hip Hop was going to shift to mainly white rappers'

Here we are in 2014 and the most popular rapper from my area is a black guy from Compton (Kendrick). Just like it was in 2005 (Game)....and in 1992 (Dr Dre)....and in 1987 (Eazy-E)....

So I dunno..I just don't believe that white rappers from the suburbs will ever become the norm. Hasn't happened in 20-25 years out in LA.

I can agree with this.

There's a lotta quality white rappers on the underground, but as far as mainstream, none of em have had any significant impact or commercial success outside of Macklemore currently cuz of his topic choice.

Macklemore has peaked. He'll never have another thrift shop or can't hold us down.

You REALLY think iggy will be around 3 years from now?
he does not need another thrift shop.
you see once you've been put on in a major huge way and you happen to be white, you can release some mediocre shyt and still sell.
there is no way you can tell me that {insert huge white artist},madonna, justin timberlake, eminem's later albums are on par with their earlier stuff.
yet they continue selling, but a black artist does not have that luxury. you become mediocre - you are done. ask 50 cent WHO WAS THE BIGGEST ARTIST ONCE!!!
macklemore just needs to release an ok catchy song and he is back on top and the face of mainstream hip hop again - only eminem or half white drake/j.cole might stand in his way.
TRUTH!!!!
