Yes, but we're talking pre-internet and social media era. Now, not only can the audience participate, but they can consume the content whenever they want. The labels realized this and have made a push to re-do what they've done in the past with other white hip hop acts, but this time seal the deal. The key to this whitewashing is personalization and immediate consumption via the internet and all of the platforms it has made available. Back then you didn't have Britney Spears collabing with Petey Pablo.....but now you have Miley Cyrus crossing back and forth between Hip Hop and Pop, spreading the popularity and bits and pieces of the culture to the young white female audience. That has never happened before.
What about Christina Aguilera collabing with rappers? Or Gwen Stefani?
