Mad Men on the surface is about ad men in the 60s and the ups and downs that come with their lifestyles and their jobs. Those lifestyles include being married, ex wives, divorces, kids, alcohol and infidelity. It's chronicled this particular group of professionals all through the 60s and now that the show is ending, it's going to end in the 70s. Focusing on its main character of Don Draper and his life, which has involved being married with three kids, while not being able to keep his pants up and has cheated on his wife numerous times. He's got issues with infidelity and issues with his past and coming to grips with it. The metaphor is that a guy who's made a living off of selling people dreams and selling them realities has also been selling people a dream and a false reality of his own life. Don Draper is an illusion, something he created.
Underneath the surface, the show is a chronicle of america through the 60s: women's rights, civil rights, the moon landing, the kennedy assassination, etc and how the country evolved all throughout the 60s and how that evolution impacted the world of advertisement as well. Earlier in the shows run they treated women a very different way than they treat them now as the show is coming to an end, along with african americans as well. When the show first started, it was acceptable for Don, Roger and others to just drink as much as they wanted in their offices but as the series has gone on, it's become less acceptable just as it did in real life. There are layers to the show with every character. The main idea, at least for me, is that they can sell the world on a vision and a way of life but can't get their personal lives to match the vision and ideals they have for it. They're all flawed characters and have done some wrong things to achieve success in their business, even prostituting a woman out for a client
If you want to follow a show about compelling characters, one that chronicles the ups and downs of the american journey through the decade of the 60s along with great writing, then mad men is the show for you
