I always got the impression that his character was a victim of bad timing. It was almost too current for its own good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Hassan popped up when Heyman was head writer on Smackdown, no? And Paul was at least present for the start of it. Once Heyman dipped, I wouldn't trust Vince McMahon to right a nuanced foreign character if his life depended on it.

Then all the stuff happened with the London bombings around the time Paul got the boot and they promptly threw him in the bushes once controversy hit.

Good for him not feeling bitter about it :ehh:

Yeah but he started on Raw... moved to SD in June '05, I think Paul had been moved to OVW by then.

This is a great interview. Humble guy. Wish him the best but...

You're 100 percent Italian, right? You could have wound up with a Jersey Shore gimmick.

"100 percent Italian from Syracuse, New York.

I think he had too much heat in the back, and when the opportunity to bury him knocked, WWE answered.

Why else would they air a TAPED segment the day of the London Bombings?!

Could have easily edited it the Jihadi Swat force off Smackdown, or replaced the entire match with a Raw recap.

fukking. Bullshyt.

Good to finally hear from Copani about his feelings on the character and why he retired from the ring. One thing about it he was one of their real true heels who everyone hated and Vince probably would have put the title on him eventually if the controversy hadn't occurred.

its cool that he went out of the business instead of destroying himself for indie checks

Rare you'll ever see someone get heat like that. Damn shame, at least dude has a career...could have been the main heel. Daivaris underrated as well.

Such a good interview. I don't blame him for getting out when he did. very cool that he was at peace with finishing up with wrestling when he did, and immediately moved on. It didn't weight on him, nor did he ever get that itch to go back. He mentioned some of the pain that he does still feel physically today, but it could be A LOT worse.
