I never got how anyone could speak poorly of Russ because of this. He is raising a young black man. That is automatic respect. 
That said, the age definitely helps. At 9 months the kid doesnt know anything other than you being dad. Taking on a 9 year old that either knows his pops or has spent a years with just mom is something different.
