maybe his next album will push him over abel but his music is too airy and lovey duvey for me

"im that nikka with the hair poppin pills fukking bytches living life so trill" :wow: :wow:

frank could never pull off a track like tell your friends or losers or can't feel my face

:whoa: he's still that nikka though i was just jamming to super rich kids the other day

We All Try > any song Weeknd has ever released imo

great song but i completely disagree :manny:

i like the vulgarity of weeknd. frank seems like a nice guy.

depends on my mood tbh

I respect that. I don't like vulgarity in RnB. Throws off the vibe imo. Because singing is innately 'sweeter' and less 'direct' than rapping. If you really wanna be vulgar and say that real shyt, why not just rap? To me, RnB cats that get vulgar are just trying too hard. Wanna seem edgy but they're really not because RnB is not edgy anyway. I feel like they do it to cover up mediocre vocals and song concepts. :yeshrug:

and the irony is that I find Frank Ocean edgier than pretty much any modern RnB singer because he's willing to sing about shyt nobody wants to sing about. Singing about poppin pills and p*ssy isn't edgy to me AT ALL. It's so rote at this point. and I know these singers are doing it to fit in, not to be bold. Edgy people are bold and do their own thing, vulgarity or not.

Call Frank Ocean sweet, but dude made a song singing about the nature of belief. A topic no one wants to cover. Saying shyt like he fukks with abortion even though he's a believer and doesn't believe the American flag is on the moon. That's edgy.

Frank is extremely talented no doubt

But calling him better at rapping than Kendrick is where I got off the boat

they're both super talented. if weeknd isn't edgy thank frank definitely isn't. they both have distinctive styles that have been mimicked. and let's not act like everyone didn't steal weeknd's sound.

drake is rapping weeknd. rihanna is female weeknd. travis scott is producer weeknd. bryson tiller is the replacement weeknd. and the list goes on.

remember, house of balloons came out in 2011.. there was a shift in popular music around 2012.. not saying it was all him but :francis: lets be real he was a big part

not many nikkas going plat on their first shyt ever

frank got a better voice and his song structures are generally better. from a musical stand point i would say he's more talented.

but weeknd takes me somewhere frank doesn't :wow:

or is Weeknd the singing Drake? :sas2:

I'm from Toronto, breh. I know people took Drake's sound and ran with that muhfukka. I wouldn't be surprised if Weeknd's part of that.

And I agree - once Weeknd came with HOF and it was an underground hit, people started biting Weeknd's shyt. But Weeknd's sound didn't come out of nowhere. There's a reason why he's OVO affiliated.

Check this out:

That moody "VIP section with the girls and the drinks" pop RnB sound comes from 40. Is this all that different from that cavernous dark Weeknd sound? They just took 40's sound and coked it out. I could be wrong but that's what it seems like to me.

Just a thought: Why does it matter so much that he's gay? People in this thread saying that's a criticism they have for him need to grow up. His sexuality isn't going to affect you and he isn't the first (or last) singer to come out of the closet/be implied to be in it.

"I wish he wasn't gay." The hell? :martin:

IDGAF about his sexuality all that matters is if the music remains dope Nostalgia Ultra is one best debuts I've heard from a new artist in years. I didn't take in Channel Orange as easily but I grew to love it after repeated listens.

Your first post would make more sense if you attacked people for being homophobes but instead you're attacking their musical taste when Frank Ocean was arguably the most popular R&B singer on sohh/the coli for awhile. I was actually on sohh when Nostalgia Ultra dropped and the reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

Aside from a few "he's overrated" posters, the trolls who hate on everything, and the R&B purists who couldn't get past how weak his vocals are, majority of sohh/the coli loved it. And when Pyramids dropped his popularity on the coli was at an all-time high, just peep this thread
http://www.thecoli.com/threads/frank-ocean-pyramids-new-hes-back.11292/

Frank Ocean was more popular than the Weeknd with coli posters at this point and I blatantly remember Frank stans constantly shytting on the Weeknd, calling his music gay(how ironic). Frank really didn't start getting a tremendous amount of hate on the coli until people found out he was bi/gay. And most of that was less about people here thinking his music was trash and more about feeling :merchant:that they were vibing and stanning music from a homo. But everything you said about Nostalgia Ultra as far as the music, the majority of the coli would agree with you. It's okay to have an opinion that the majority of the coli would agree with bruh, it doesn't take away from your credibility

Not gonna lie this was me after the announcement still fukk with his music heavily though :mjlol:

I was shytting on posters who slander Ocean period. Whether it's because of his music or him being bi. My argument was that his music is strong enough to transcend whatever hate you have for him, music related or not.

i agree that 40 is probably the man behind everything but illangelo (weeknd's producer) takes it way darker than 40

boi 1da, illangelo, majid jordan and 40 are them nikkas in toronto. fukk drake and weeknd. they could do it without em.

interesting that weeknd and frank experimented producing on their last albums :jbhmm: i wonder how much of their actual production went into each album
