You said yourself it's a subjective word, which tells me everyone has their own definition of it... so why is so important? and why is it the first word thrown because one doesn't agree or support a Obama basher's opinion? I asked people and they give me "I'll tell you what it means but not in front these people."

It's not really important in a definitive sense. Its a word of context. Mephistopheles did a good job of summing up generally what it means in America though. In casual arguments like you experienced its basically a label to paste on people in order to box their views in, just like the word conservative is. Liberal and conservative are words that are used to describe something on the political spectrum, but the way you use it is always relative.
