That’s a lame azz excuse considering that wasn’t even the most offense joke that night levied at a celebrity in attendance. Celebrities taking up for Will when if they did what he did, then they would have gotten kicked out of the building and completely shunned out of Hollywood.
It’s hard to feel bad for him when he’s privileged and brought it on himself.
The Kristen Dunst joke was more offensive, yet she kept her composure and didn’t bum rush the stage like Will did. That’s who should have gotten on stage and slapped somebody.

They didn’t have a choice in the matter to let him stay though as it would have caused more controversy if they forced him out of the building. Them standing was being professional based on the event and the award being given even if they weren’t happy with what happened.
