The fact that most of the time not answering the judge at all is not the right way to go, judges will punish you for not at all responding. You're essentially assuming that Game not hiring a lawyer was the smartest thing to do just because he didn't hire a lawyer. If Game somehow ends up paying his lawyer $40K and settling for $30K is that not a better result than a default judgement for $100K?
A good lawyer might have at least argued down the punitive damages or presented mitigating circumstances/evidence.
