Pretty much all of no limits run was promoting every artist by being featured on other peoples projects.
Snoop dogg was one of the most anticpated artists out because of his features on the chronic.
Lil waynes run up the carter 3 was hugely based off all the features he was killing.
Canibus entire buzz came from features.
I could keep going and going and going. Being featured on other artists projects is one of the oldest and most reliable ways for promotion for yourself

The plan was to launch his album next after Dre so the idea was there from the start. And the album was not even a solo album, it was a soundtrack to the movie. Had features from everybody.
