Rev. Calvin Butts, towering NY religious and political figure, dies at 73
Butts was the pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, one of the city's largest congregations.

In addition to being pastor at the largest Black church in NY (The Abyssinian, which was founded by Aframs and Ethiopians in NYC in 1808) this man was a Black political icon in New York and signed off on millions in grants for Black & Brown business while working with Gov Pataki (who was one of the least racist NY governors largely because of Rev Butts) being on his council) A Pan-Africanist, he also chaired AfricareNYC, a NY based African aid development group that not only feeds millions of our people on the continent, but bridges cultural gaps (That many of us sabotage) between Africans. I’m staunchly no-vote,no political involvement but this brother here is a Black icon. Like much of this site, he also took a stand against gangsta rap and violence in rap music, predicting that it would create the violence it often decries, but unlike this site, he defended young Black men in the ghetto, standing in unity with the Central Park 5. He was a mainstay in Black New York and many churches will be repeating all of his victories on Sunday.
This was undoubtedly a Black legend and every Black New Yorker owes him something. I really hope to see some places in Harlem and Brooklyn named after him. I know he’s got some in Long Island.
