The Hipsters and NYC

A lot of minorities are getting rich off this gentrification shyt... But that doesn't fit into the victim narrative so no one wants to hear it

From what I see here (in Europe), "ethnic" businesses are booming, just as "street culture" is...and it's the hipsters buying.

From what I gather from the thread a lot of people just seem upset at having people from outside the neighbourhood move in and change that neighbourhood, so that's not really about hipsters per se, happens all the time everywhere. "Arty" people/students have been living in "poor" or fringe areas forever.

Anyway, I have a question: what qualifies as a "hipster"? I mean apart from the way they dress? I'm asking because I think the phenomenon is a little different here, in France and Belgium we have the so-called "bobos" (which stands for "bourgeois bohémiens") that are kind of like left-wing/educated/artsy/vegetarian/"we are all brothers"/"green"/save the world new-age hippies, but with (often parent's) money. I think the only difference with "hipsters" would be that hipsters seem to be more about the hype, fashion, latest Iphone and hottest new artist, and not even acting as if they have a "social" or "political" stance. What y'all think?

The general shunning of seemingly simple, accepted things like Nike or Bud Light. Choosing to like fringe, unknown (and most of the time) really shytty artists for the sake of calling them "visionary" or just to be on the next big thing before its big. People that swear by websites like Pitchfork.

how you describe it is similar but its more about Art and looking the part here than it is about social issues or politics.

Some of them are really cool once you know them and ALOT of them you just have to at...mostly the females.

There is a very wide opinion of what hipsters are. I have heard dudes who call anyone who is basically better dressed/more cultured than them hipsters. Theres people I know who I would probably call hipsters, but know they have been the same way since long before the term (re)gained popularity... whereas I think the term hipster is supposed to imply a blind trendhopper + culture thief. The definition is so open ended it doesn't really exist. Its like the term "c00n"

OK yeah that's what I was thinking, especially the bolded. Those "bobos" I was referring too don't care one bit about fashion and "what's hot", their (declardes) thing is social awareness and politics.

I'm amazed at how people from all walks of life can willingly shut themselves from entire areas of life/art/whatever. Like hipsters will shun off "mainstream" stuff, while some in the mainstream will shun off "hipster" music. It's so easy to listen to both and get the best of both worlds.

The opposite happens and it is a race riot, people jumping other guys because they move into their neighborhood is stupid, get a record and have even less chances to make it, that is real smart just imagine keeping your area clean and safe for each other and not shopping elsewhere problem solved, instead guys want to say my hood is to gully for hipsters, we to real, well money talks louder than that bs, everyone has to evolve, get educated and stop with my hood has to trash to be good, and it it worse when hipsters arrive make the place livable again, the thing i hate most is when i see on tv or read in the paper some old piece of trash saying i been living here for 20-30 years through various drug and gang wars and now i can pay my rent, the hipsters priced me out, instead thinking why after 30 years you in the same spot and don't own shyt.
