Most inventions of old weren't developed in university though. As a matter of fact think about all the inventors who dropped out of school, that's even for the sciences.
Liberal arts education in general was created to civilize people to behave a certain way so they could socialize with the upper class, e.g., why there's so much emphasis on literature (especially European) and history (especially European).
That's why you have people who can intellectualize and philosophize but can't change their own tires, or repair things on their own...we've become a society of consumers due to our lack of ability while most of us are so overeducated. Education has worked to increase our wants and needs but not our incomes.
This legislation will most likely dissuade people from grad school as it should because 50% don't even need to be there.
What needs to happen next is a rebranding of labor so people champion it and not look down on it.
I agree about the possible need for more skills-based Labor, but I’m thinking the illegal labor workforce has that covered. Like I implied earlier, the mindset of the American workforce has changed....they know there’s an illegal contractor that will do that work for pennies on the dollar so why should they learn that?
Concerning your argument of the value of education, in our current times, there are way more highly educated, intelligent, college-educated individuals contributing more for a better way of life than not. Back then, I doubt a bus driver was cruisin down the street and instantly thought of a way to cure small pox. Sure, there are true natural Einsteins born daily, but they are very few and far between. Also, a lot of those old inventors actually started school and learned of concepts that further enhanced their ability to invent.
You knock liberal arts education, but without it, you wouldn’t have culture. So, in the end, I believe all university education is important for the advancement of our society as well as the country/world.
You are right about the cost burden of education today....shouldn’t even be an issue in this country, but the continued capitalization of the education system will be yet another missing screw that will make America collapse...
