I think that some artists get better between album 1 and album 2 by really finding their indentity musically. Some some artists 2nd album is better than their first. On occasion, a 3rd album may be their best work yet, but most people get lazy, lose inspiration, have too much of the "lavish life" and start straying away from themselves. In general, yeah - their old ish IS better. Of course there are exceptions.
I like new Meth over mid 90s Meth. Face is even better than the great he was back then. I can't stand old State Prop, but I love their newer music. Trag is always consistent. I can't think of too many more
