Can't agree more. 1984 and Brave New World are like two sides of the coin in my opinion, one a system of oppression which attempts to use top down surveillance and threats of physical violence to enforce conformity, the other a system of consenting conformity willingly adopted by the individual out of fear of social ostracism. The brute force tactics of Ingsoc in 1984 were written by Orwell to mirror the tactics of the Soviet Union and it's allies, and the obviously horrific nature of everyday life presented in 1984 seems to stick in the minds of people; But more often its the quiet, creeping, self imposed isolation of consumerism, instant gratification, and media disinformation and sensationalism; The world which Huxley detailed, which is really at play in the modern world.

Even if you think you're a good guy and have nothing to hide doesn't mean you should be breathing a sigh of relief. What if you have a crazy ex or cousin you cut out of your life suddenly start thinking about you again? Or some employer wants to go digging through your family's medical history?
