I think the white dude, just made a similar formula and popularized it.

So now more people have heard of a Jheri curl, than a California Curl.

Also Willie Morrow "invented" the Modern Afro Comb, Breh was basically a Black hair "pioneer".

The Afro comb was of course first created in Africa thousands of years ago, but Breh "brought" it to America and modified it.

The California Curl brand had a good run in the 80's, and I remember seeing their ads in Ebony & Jet.
Jheri Redding had the most effective branding & marketing, though. Even though there were similar products (California Curl, Wave Nouveau, etc.), the Jheri Curl name got the Kleenex effect where we just started calling all of those hairstyles Jheri curls.
