In the intro of the game, Joel was a happy man, but when Sarah was killed he lost his meaning in life, so he slumped into this darkness. We saw Joel and Ellie's relationship grow throughout the entirety of the game. When Ellie came into the picture, he started to let her light up his world. He has a new reason to live with Ellie in his life becuase she can take the place of his daughter. This becomea more apparent when he starts calling her "baby girl" and bringing up Sarah more often. Joel can't go and lose someone else he's loved all over again, that would completely break him. It was like just traveling with Ellie was restoring his own humanity. And then, he gets to the Fireflies, who say that the vaccine they can potentially make will kill Ellie. Joel had lost everything dear to him, and losing Ellie would have pushed him back over the edge.

Ellie had her share of troubles, as well. She was bitten alongside her best friend, who became infected while she remained sane. Then Tess died, then Sam was bitten, and the list goes on. I get this sense that she was kinda wanting it all to end; if the vaccine meant she had to die, then she would at least not have to go through any more loss. Also, she was told throughout the entire game that she had to go to the Fireflies. Her life was no longer her own. I'm sure she knew that Joel was lying about the Fireflies, but she's a smart girl. She may know that Joel was, in fact, trying to free her from her burden of saving humanity, as well making sure he still had something in the world to fight for.

So, to answer your question, I don't think he was

The Last of Us just :wow:

These Kids
Yea. Kids I created, not someone elses kid I killed people with. Joel is a degenerate. Used to be one of those bandits that rob and kill tourists who are in the run for shelter. God knows what he had planned for Ellie
A coward would've kept that side to him/herself. His humanity was regained by the end of the game.
I forgave his evil deeds. lol

Joel was a coward because he shared everything but kept the most important information from a girl he lived because of his need to have someone to himself.

If I was ellie father I wouldn't want her traveling around with some homicidal maniac raider.

Bet any living relative of the people he victimized don't forgive him. Babysitting some little cac don't don't redeem shyt to me.

Negativity (Kayfabe)
looking back at it...what are your thoughts as of right now

on Joel's decision to stop the surgery and lie to Ellie about the Fireflies
I didn't think videogames had it in 'em to end a game like that.

All I can say; I can't judge Joel.

Man fukk that punk-ass dude, Joel:pacspit:

What a selfish b*stard, probably dooming humanity just so he can continue his selfish fantasy of playing daddy.

Motherfukker killed Marlene too, who probably had a greater claim on being a parent to Ellie, ....y'know considering the fact that she knew Ellie for her entire life and not just a few months:rudy:

Dudes on some, "but, but, but how do we know the cure was gonna work?:bryan: Joel saw the bad in humanity and decided it wasn't worth saving:to:"

Man, get right off that:childplease: You know that cure was gonna work. Don't bring your real world logic into this. What kinda weight would the ending carry if it wasn't certain the cure was gonna work?:childplease:
Also, ya'll quick to pretend you didn't see Joel leaving that family stranded on the side of the road on day one of the outbreak. You telling me he saw the "bad in humanity" way back then?:stopitslime:

And lastly, the most important point which hardly ever gets mentioned, we all know exactly what Ellie would have chosen if presented with the option to carry on living or dying to save humanity and so did Joel:ufdup:

fukk Joel man:pacspit: I hope he got his head split by some grimey-ass raider:scust:

Nah I don't think she did, she was all for saving the world at her own expense.
no I think she knew. the circumstances were just too wonky for her to accept what he told her at face value. she might not have known exactly what happened but she knew joel took her out of there by force. just like joel didnt want to let her go she got attached to him too and accepted the lie he told her.
