My theory is that the Firefiles and The Cult have been beefing for a min. Ellie's mom (The chick in the 2nd trailer) is apart of the Firefiles which is why the asian kid says "But she's with them" before she cuts her down. Neil also said we're going to be playing through two different timelines.

And yeah, Ellie was born during the Outbreak. It's the reason why she doesn't know anything about modern times before the Outbreak.
