Maybe but I think good TV will overcome all that.. and the source material is a good start..

Besides at this point the audience knows there's no more Joel, I don't necessarily think they're super attached to Ellie

I'm glad they at least stuck to the format

Also I seen a news sure report that sunday's episode leaked but I'm not sure it's still available.
I mean yeah, good/great writing can overcome anything.

My point is that Mazin made his job way harder by sticking with a very complex narrative structure that becomes even more challenging in a TV setting than in a video game. There were other ways to make season 2 and 3 easier to write and present to the audience, but he decided to be as faithful to the 2nd game as possible and it's gonna be a big challenge for the third season, hell, it's already been one for the 2nd season.
