What's everyone's thoughts about Spotify for the long term?
I'm thinking it's replacing Radio in the next 10 years

I sold my position at a loss in March for $121:mjcry:

I held on to it for a minute before I sold but it just wasn’t moving :snoop:

Long term I still believe it will be difficult for them to be profitable in the future even with their podcast acquisitions

Now if they buy out SiriusXM....

Question specifically for this thread:

What do yall do for your long term positions during Earnings Report? I've got 3-4 coming up in my portfolio.... Do you lock in some gains? Buy puts for downside protection? Do you just assume it's going to go higher or are you content with whatever happens because you are in it for the long haul?

That's pretty much it for me. If I believe in the company for long-term I'm investing regularly like I would if it was an index fund.

Long term for me is 7-10 years. Keep in mind I'm 43...so when I get to be 50 or so I'm going to start minimizing my risk.

Im currently all in on index funds

What are some strategies used to select individual stocks

I'm going to recommend Investopedia.com...you can start with this article: How to make a winning long-term stock pick

The general common rule is a company with a solid history of maintaining a profitability, a reasonably low p/e ratio and pays dividends.

I think the question should be asked is, what do you guys consider a long-term. 7-10 years for me (or until early 50s age). Once you hit your 50s I think you should start reconsidering your allocations.

That said, here are some holdings that I plan on keeping for the next 20 years or until retirement age.

Individual stocks. All are dividend paying stocks that I still see around in 20 years:

Duke Energy
Exxon
McDonald's
AT&T

ETFs/Index Fund:
QQQ ETF (Has good percentage of FAANG and Microsoft).
Schwab S&P 500 Index Fund
Schwab Total Stock Market Index Fund

I see brehs discussing day trading options, and quick flips in the other investing threads. Some even admitting they don't even know what the hell they're doing. I don't see that ending well for a lot of folks.

This is for brehs in it for the long haul, who intend to buy and hold for the long term.

Here's my current positions -

Index/ETF's:
VTSAX
QQQ
VGT

Individual stocks:
AAPL
MSFT
V
FB

Short-Term Gambles (I know, I know, contradictory to the thread title, but this is a small percentage of my portfolio):
OPES
SHLL

Waiting for a good entry point to get in:
TSLA, SQ
Couple changes since I made the thread. Added TSLA. Also added SE, TDOC, and MGM on dips. Sold V. Took another gamble with WKHS and betting they get part of the upcoming USPS contract. Missed the boat on SQ :snoop:

Updated Positions:

Index/ETF's:
VTSAX
QQQ
VGT

Individual stocks:
AAPL
MSFT
FB
TSLA
SE
TDOC
MGM

Short-Term plays:
SHLL
OPES
WKHS

One month update:
Index/Mutual Funds - [401k / HSA / Regular Vanguard Account]
LIVKX (Most of my money is in here)
[New] VOO - Purchased 8/5
VSMAX
VSMPX
VTIAX
VFIFX

  • I am switching HSA providers for a greater investment selection. I had to liquidate my existing positions (VSMAX, VSMPX, VTIAX).
  • Switched from VFIFX to VOO so that I can set a stop loss instead of having to actively manage the position.

Individual stocks [Roth IRA]
[New]
TWTR - Purchased 8/6
[New] FCEL - Purchased 8/6
WTRH - Purchased 6/23 Exited 7/24
OMI - Purchased 7/7 Stopped out
GRWG - Purchased 7/7 Stopped out
  • Switched brokers for my IRA (eTrade -> ThinkOrSwim). ThinkOrSwim is just a better platform for my trading strategy.
  • I exited the position but WTRH is easily my biggest winner ever in my Roth IRA. Lost track of the exact winnings since my cost basis was screwed up when I changed brokers but I think I made 10x what I risked.
  • The majority of my Roth IRA is in cash doing jack shyt. I think I should allocate maybe 50% to a general benchmark ETF like QQQ, and staple a trail stop on it to lock in gains. :jbhmm:

Potential Trades - [Roth IRA]
