They fukked it up.

The race is supposed to be a big nation wide event, like the Superbowl/Boston Marathon rolled into one. The movie made it seem like a tiny thing. In the book there are spectators everywhere as this is the event/party of the year and the racers are superstars with people betting on them like horses.

The book is way more nihilistic as it’s an allegory for kids being marched off to Vietnam. The major may as well be God and the soldiers his demons as neither of them shows any emotion at all and the kids have no way of fighting back and it’s barely a thought in their heads until the end.

They rolled a lot of characters into each otherwise which is ok as obviously you can’t be as thorough as the book but rolling Scramm and Stebbens into each other was weird. Completely different characters and a lot of things were lost that made Stebbens perhaps the best character in the book if not he most impactful.

Also Barkovitch wasn’t nearly as annoying as he should’ve been. “I’ll walk you down Garratty, I’ll dance on your grave!”.

The book ending was perfect and in this one they were afraid to commit to a compete pessimistic ending.

Lastly the British dudes playing Black Americans. Just stop. Could barely understand them through their forced accents.

Disappointing in what is my favorite King story.

It was kinda trash. Sure, if you shut your brain off you can get immersed in the emotional "stakes" inherent with each character but mired with nonsensical behavior and cheap deaths

Like seriously, aside from the premise that made no fukkin sense left much to be desired the way it was presented, what was really jarring/confusing was the cognitive dissonance the boys seemed to have about the predicament they "willingly" signed up for.

I'm sure there were rules/automatic warnings to be issued that prohibited fisticuts or simply stomping on nyggas feet off rip but that's still the type of energy i'd expect from young men entering an event like this. The shyt been going on for years so they all knew with absolute certainty that each and every one of them except one would get gunned down. It could end in the first hour or on day 10 but nyggas had to die. No loops holes or workarounds.

And so yea, nyggas showing up in timbs, jeans, and the power of friendship in their hearts didn't make any cotdamn sense. Like they didn't read the brochure.
