directionless? i don't think that's true at all. they have a vision of integrating windows 10 across console and PC. not sure how that is directionless. as far as giving developers a short leash to produce hits, it's their system so it's their call
microsoft had an idea of what they wanted the x1 to be originally, but had to pivot when they didn't get the response or reaction they expected. and i'm sure microsoft was planning to create a seamless experience between windows devices, it probably happened sooner than they anticipated because of Sony and xbox sales but the xbox brand will be alright. they're adjusting well imo.
i'm more disappointed with the windows phone. it had so much potential.

Microsoft need to just jump with both feet in the pc space and call it day. This one one foot in pc and one foot in console is dumb. Both should have the same capabilities. The scorpio should be able to run Windows 10 full and you should be able to go on steam.
Take it from me, a strict console gamer, if they did that, I'd probably go to PS[4..5...etc] before I delve into pc gaming.
I want my shyt tasting like the best microwave meal possible... insert game, install, play with friends w/o worrying about install graphics card, update sound card, upgrade fan, etc.
I understand PC gaming is much easier now than ever (is this true?) but, I want the quickest and easiest where the developer does the job to optimize their game for my system instead of me having to continue to optimize my system for the game.
I'm just one consumer but my gut tells me that my demographic represents somewhat of an influential consumer base.
Like Sony's is any better.

Halo, Gears, Knights of the Old Republic, Fable, Sunset Overdrive, Dead Rising and whatever else were all from third party studios initially. They acquired some of the IPs, but they haven't done anything to build their own platform and stable of games/studios.

The Xbox One made me realize that it's time for me to stop gaming on consoles. shyt I use it as a media center for the most part. I've been playing my PS3 and 360 more than I have my One.
This isnt true.
The OG xbox had a hard drive. Before that we had memory cards.
They've also moved the console space to more unified pc like structure which is better for gamers as a whole.
So a couple other hardware things, one of which was from 2001. Nothing as far as games is concerned.
Halo was under Microsoft and Bungie actually helped created Xbox what it was. Bungie wanted the hard drive to be added to the original Xbox. Gears was Microsoft as well. Fable as well everything else were one game contracts
Bungie was gonna release it to PC exclusively, then MS nabbed it and had them release it on XBox.
Epic Games is not owned by Microsoft and MS had to buy the Gears IP from them.

Microsoft owned Bungie and they let them go because Microsoft only wanted Halo not Destiny.

I'm still waiting on that Surface phone. GET TO WORK, MICROSOFTThat's Microsoft all around....its like they start projects and just say fukk it...Windows phone "should" have been dope with the vision they set forward at the beginning with continuum. I was hyped to get a another Win phone, then they just.....stopped....
