His early albums are funky as fukk. And even as he veered in other directions on his own albums, he created The Time - a straight up funk band, just so he could keep making funk.

He was definitely a funk artist, but he was so diverse that some people think of him more as a pop artist. But even Purple Rain had a lot of funk on it. And everyone has heard Kiss, which was probably one of the last pure funk songs to go #1 on radio (for any artist). Prince veered away from funk later as he got more religious but it's worth noting that when he finally got back into that bag completely it produced his biggest album in a decade plus. That's how much demand there was for him to return to that shyt.
