He was definitely a funk artist, but he was so diverse that some people think of him more as a pop artist. But even Purple Rain had a lot of funk on it. And everyone has heard Kiss, which was probably one of the last pure funk songs to go #1 on radio (for any artist). Prince veered away from funk later as he got more religious but it's worth noting that when he finally got back into that bag completely it produced his biggest album in a decade plus. That's how much demand there was for him to return to that shyt.

What is your definition of Funk?

Funk was heavy bass guitar driven. A lit of it had horn sections

Slave was funk. Listen to Slide, Watching You..etc..
Ohio players is funk. Listen to Skintight etc..
Rick James is funk. Listen to his bass lines
Prince didn't use heavy bass guitar. More synths than anything

Prince a legend but not a forefather

Foundation is james brown, sly stone, George Clinton, and jimi hendrix

Even if you wanna go all time, the list still really gotta remain the same cause of who we're talking about

Dont get it fukked up though. Curtis Mayfield and stevie wonder belong but we're limited to only four :manny:

I done heard it all now. Sly ain't funk :russ:

You tripping on prince too but I'll chop it up as you only familiar with purple rain
no, Ill chalk it up to you not knowing Ohio Players, Lakeside, Slave, Parliament, Rick James etc

I can go more with Sly, but he was in the psychadelic hippy sounding shyt.. He just not a first thought for ME as funk. but he did have the standard horn section

Basslines and horn sections are funk. Where was Prince horn section?

this is funk

All of them are funk breh

You telling me having song that literally invented slap bass, a hallmark of funk music, doesn't make them funk :mjlol:

And horn sections aren't a requirement for funk. Prince used synths as a replacement. You're reducing the music down to the instruments when it's more about the beat and the rhythm

Things would get pretty boring if it was reduced down to a formula. We need people like prince to push the mode and be creative. Such as not using bass but still maintaining the rhythm

James Brown was bigger than being relegated to a single genre. Arguably the most influential music artist ever
Shiiit whole musical genres came from James brown's loins. Hip Hop is just one of his many children
