The NFL outside the USA and soccer in the USA are both heavily marketed novelties. Curious People with FOMO(fear of missing out) will attend annual nfl games in Europe or Brazil, and soccer games in America because they don’t want to miss out on these special and rare events. Their temporary and fickle interest in these sports never go beyond amused curiosity, there's nothing more to it. It’s like another fun activity, like going to the beach or the movie theaters for them. I guess that There might be new converts to football or soccer but most people in attendance will likely forget about the existence of these sports as soon as the games/events are over. Soccer will always rule Europe/brazil with an iron fist, and gridiron football will always be king in the USA. This will never change.

Rugby is a sport similar to football and is very popular in the UK, France, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. Most Rugby fans overseas look down on the NFL product and see gridiron sport as a b*stardized and inferior version of rugby. They see the nfl as a poor imitation of rugby.

Even if football grows internationally, it will never replace and overtake soccer. Let alone other sports like basketball , baseball, rugby, cricket, and hockey.

Soccer is one of the most played sport among kids in America. But it has never resulted in big grassroot interest a professional level. And playing soccer as a kid doesn’t translate to interests in the sport. Not many Americans follow the domestic league, the MLS or English Premier League. Soccer isn’t taken seriously, it’s seen as a soccer mom sport for kids in the suburbs lol. The only sports taken seriously in the US are football, basketball, and baseball . Because The best American athletes play these three sports.

Where’s the American Ronaldo or Messi yet? It’s well known that many sports fans in America are narcissistic, insular, chauvinistic, and obsessed with themselves first and foremost. They don’t care about foreign athletes and foreign sports like that. They need a local, American born and raised, relatable soccer star to even start to be interested in the sport.

Don't forget to factor in the large amount of expats that attend those games.

Yeah most locals in America won’t attend these soccer games just like most locals outside America won’t attend these NFL games. There are many American expats who live in the UK or Brazil.

Facts the kids on Tik Tok love SGA, they be making those edits I see all the time. This site ain't the greatest for capturing the pulse of the youth I ain't gon lie lol

Not to mention, look at LeBron’s tv ratings and shoe sales prior to “becoming a villain”/joining south beach. Look at KD’s tv ratings prior to joining the warriors and “burner-gate”. Funny how the spike up coincides with big cities (and turning heel).

Even as a Heatle or his 2nd stint with CLE, LBJ’s big playoff ratings were vs Chicago and Boston, but mid numbers vs OKC, SAS, Indiana. Great and cool as Kobe was, he benefited from having his whole career in Los Angeles.

Put Shai in NYK with his current roster and success, he’d be peak Kobe/Jeter popularity. Blasphemy to 40-year old coli posters, I know

Sure did.

For league viewership, no. It dropped off the cliff after MJ no different than it did for Golf viewership when Tiger slipped.
You said it only benefited one player, are you going to seriously argue that the popularity of MJ and the Bulls dynasty didn't play a factor in salaries increasing? That the success of the Air Jordan didn't lead to a boon in players getting their own signature shoe deals? You can even argue that it bled into other sports with Griffey/Deion/etc., the market for shoe deals before/after MJ is night and day.

It benefited MJ and Nike without question.

But it didn’t benefit the NBA in the long term

The problem with this is what happens when the player leaves the league?

Teams are always gonna be there, players won’t

There’s a difference between following the Warriors bc you love the Warriors and following the Warriors bc you love Steph

Thats why you put teams in small markets where there isnt anything else for fans to do. But the NBA doesnt want to do that now do they? There is no scenario where you have a bunch of non descript nikkas on a team, and the TEAM is loved outside of the locals. If you actually bring back tougher defense, enforcers and trash talk,THEN you could at least have some of these non descript teams be hated globally. Dillion Brooks gave them the blueprint on a silver platter. The players/media need to sell the game through trash talk and intensity.

Most coli posters specialize in being wrong about everything in one area. The OP has managed to become a man of many hats in that regard:mjlol:.

You know you wrong when you cosign any idea that ball headed reptillian Adam Silver draws up.

The game is not the same, this isnt the 90s where media has an impact. Social media has more of an impact. One thing that would help is creating a easy and cheap way for people to toggle through all the games on line. How do you expect people to care when they dont know all the participants? With the NFL its week 7 and youve probably seen all these teams play multiple times in some fashion, and you have a basic knowledge of the teams dynamics/drama etc. NBA is content having nba fans only watch their own team. And since nobodies watching all 82 games, fans will probably only watch when their team plays the good teams with stars they already know. Theres so many reasons why people arent watching the nba. The analysis is at the bottom of the list. People like drama and ring debates. We dont want to see more breakdowns and drawing on a screens. Inside the NBA been hating, and players back in the day would just lean into it. It made you wanna watch them play and see how they responded.

All true.....

But the NFL doesn't need to supplant soccer, globally.

The NFL salary structure, revenue sharing, marketing etc., means it makes $$$$$$ and will continue to be #1 in America for the foreseeable future. The franchises are all among the most valuable brands globally DESPITE having less international reach.

Soccer runs (most of) the world.

Cricket runs South Asia.

Rugby runs NZ, South Africa etc. Low key it's entertaining as hell when you watch the top squads like the Springboks and All-Blacks.

Football runs America.

NBA will never truly pass the NFL until they can become #1 here. Doesn't matter how much international support they have.

Players are trying to compete and win, but analytics and salary cap restrictions have forced league parity. NBA fans need to accept that another Jordan isnt coming because the league is too optimized for one person to dominate like him in the 90s.
NBA fans haven’t accepted thus the downward trajectory since.

I said this before and will say it again, the NBA needs another MJ, someone who is next level special, charismatic, obsessed with competition and winning to the point where the rest of the league wakes up and start elevating their game play to match that player’s intensity. A tone setter of the highest degree.

The league has a competitive spirit problem and viewers can see through it and that’s why the on court product is so stagnant.
That might be Wemby.
