There needs to be a middle ground somewhere.
The unfortunate thing is no one willing to meet in the middle on this.
If you broke the law, you pay the consequence. I know people from Barbados who have been banned from the US for overstaying their visa.
I also know that the powers that be need to be realistic with tracking illegal immigrants from Mexico. It's not something that can be effectively fought with a wall.
Personally I would go for allowing temporary work status to all Mexicans, where your paycheck is immediately subject to a special emergency tax until you can prove you are a citizen. With especially harsh fines for employers who willfully violate the law and deportation.
Wouldn't stop all illegal immigration or fraud , but it would allow money to flow in via taxation. And you making an example of people caught violating the law, both immigrants and employers.
