it sounds like he was so impressed by live instruments that he forgot to write any interesting melodies or songs or for the to play. so instead he is feeling himself so much that he is content to do abstract spoken word poetry and almost tongue in cheek style content of butterflies and caterpillars.
there are tons of musical interludes which range from the sound of a cover band of cool old songs to just mood music that would be used in something like a tv show(because the music has little to no arrangement or melody.
the songs themselves are retreads of earlier west coast and southern sounds, which have been done originally and better before. vocally, kendrick varies from quiet rapper to moaning yelling odd sounds which are not musical.
he sounds like he had fun making the album ,but it aint fun to listen to. he needs to work harder to not just have live instruments making tuneful sounds, but to actual compose interesting tunes.
